Golden State lauds veteran reggae group Third World

In their 35 years as ‘Reggae Ambassadors’, Third World has travelled far and wide and much has been written about them.
However, when they played the 18th annual Jazz at Drew Festival, held at the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, California in early October, they returned to their origins in the United States and a handful of honours spoke volumes about them.

In Germany, Bounty Killer’s performance in Essen was cancelled and other German concert dates are now in doubt as gay human rights groups are coordinating a Europe-wide campaign to halt his “Deadly Alliance” tour of the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland.
Reggae: from Iowa to Hawaii
Reggae: from Iowa to Hawaii
Dave Bess is living the dream. The Hawai’i-born ‘Iolani ‘99 grad rents a house with six bandmates so they can save money for their cross-country tours. They spend summers playing at music festivals, travel together in a van, write most of their own music and enjoy the oddball notoriety of being an all-white reggae band from Iowa.

Is reggae taking over pop?

A look at the pop charts these days suggests as much, noting that two of this summer’s hottest hit singles come courtesy of Jamaican-bred newcomer Sean Kingston (Beautiful Girls) and Barbados babe Rihanna (Umbrella), both of whom incorporate heavy doses of reggae music into their hip-hop styles. Then there’s 19-year-old Kat DeLuna, who was raised in the Dominican Republic, also making serious waves on the charts and in the nightclubs with her thumping debut single Whine Up, which features Jamaican dancehall star Elephant Man.
