Jamaican authorities urge people to take cover as Hurricane Dean nears
Jamaicans headed inland and tourists fled the country as Hurricane Dean headed for a direct hit on the island Sunday after a deadly and destructive march across the eastern Caribbean.
Jamaica converted schools, churches and the indoor national sports arena into shelters and authorities urged people to take cover from a storm that could rake the country with winds of 145 mph and dump up to 20 inches of rain.

Hertz have prices as low as $15 for the weekend each day and if you book for one week it would be about $94. The program that Hertz is offering is called “Simply Wheelz,” when booking online you can go to http://www.simplywheelz.com, this will be available at the Orlando terminal starting Sept. 14th.
“Customers pick up their cars using one-stop self-service rental machines, which scan a bar code from the printed Web reservation and also scans the renter’s driver’s license. The customer selects a few additional options, such as additional drivers and insurance/waiver options, and then the machine assigns a vehicle and prints the rental agreement. The key is in the waiting car.”

During the American Revolutionary War, Lake Champlain was the scene of much activity with the British moving soldiers and supplies southward from Canada to the fight in the Colonies. The Colonists came up with the idea to stop them and as a result, there were some sea battles as well as land battles at the British Fort at Ticonderoga.
On the water, the rebels and the British used a variety of watercraft, notably the gunboat whose sole function was to bring as a platform for a cannon. These gunboats were simple affairs, not much more than a large raft and often built on th spot. A large Frigate could easily defeat one but when the gunboats were used in numbers and spread out, they could inflict serious damage on a larger and more powerful enemy ship.

Is reggae taking over pop?
Is reggae taking over pop?

A look at the pop charts these days suggests as much, noting that two of this summer’s hottest hit singles come courtesy of Jamaican-bred newcomer Sean Kingston (Beautiful Girls) and Barbados babe Rihanna (Umbrella), both of whom incorporate heavy doses of reggae music into their hip-hop styles. Then there’s 19-year-old Kat DeLuna, who was raised in the Dominican Republic, also making serious waves on the charts and in the nightclubs with her thumping debut single Whine Up, which features Jamaican dancehall star Elephant Man.

For airline travel, I covered the what-to-look-for in the Jet Blue article below. On the other hand, you may want to avoid Continental after reading the story about the Continental flight from Caracas to Newark a couple of weeks ago. You can read the story on the Elliott First Aid For Travel blog.

Airlines paying more attention to their business-class

Airlines these days are investing more money improving their Business Class where they receive most of their profits. Business travelers are regular customers of Business-class and travel anywhere from six to 12 times a year these fliers being 75 percent of the airlines customers.
“Ranked No. 1 is Singapore Airlines, which revamped its business class in the last year. In November 2006, the airline debuted a product that beats out any other airline’s, according to Plaisted. For starters, the lie-flat seats are 30 inches wide??the roomiest business-class seats in the sky??and passengers have 1,004 choices of on-demand entertainment, a significant upgrade from the previous 405. Other luxuries include Givenchy toiletry kits; full-size pillows and blankets; cuisine designed by Alfred Portale, chef of Gotham Bar & Grill in New York City; and bathrooms that are 50 percent larger than average airline bathrooms.”
